Global Warning

I went to Market Street yesterday and saw An Inconvenient Truth. It was one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. That's not saying a lot since I've never seen a Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th movie, but it was, of course, a different kind of scarey.

Al Gore lays out the basics of global warming, and he displays data through a complicated Powerpoint presentation that shows how the amount of carbon dioxide we are releasing each year is going up dramatically. The amount of carbon dioxide in the air is directly related to global temperatures. The icecaps are melting, and ocean level will rise. More so than the flooding of heavily populated areas is the displacement of those individuals. It's not so much the loss of land that will be devastating. If New Orleans remained flooded for the next 10 years, you could stand on the banks of the flooded city and say "Wow, that really sucks to see a nice city underwater." The bigger impact is the millions and millions of refugees relocating to other areas. This too can eventually be overcome, but the drain on resources for surrounding areas created by 4 million displaced New Yorkers will be tremendous. New York, Miami, New Orleans, and San Francisco will all lose a lot of ground to water.

This is just a small part of the film. It also goes back over Gore's attempt to bring environmental issues to the forefront only to be seen as a Chicken Little. But the signs are all around us now, and there are few who still deny that global warming is now occurring. I would recommend this film to anyone who would like to become more educated as to the difficulties we and our planet are facing.
